Amana vs Goodman Air Conditioners – Which Should I Choose?

Amana vs Goodman Air Conditioners – Which Should I Choose?

I often get asked brand-specific air conditioning questions, like when choosing between Amana vs Goodman air conditioners, which is better?  Those of you who have read some of my posts know that I’m a straight shooter, and although we are licensed to install and repair both Amana and Goodman air conditioning units, you can relax because we are NOT Amana distributors.  That means this article will be nothing but the absolute truth based on our personal experiences with both.  We will push neither Amana or Goodman products on you, but instead examine each based solely on their merits.  At the end of the day I can tell you though with absolute certainty that the question of whether you should choose the Amana or Goodman unit should not be the first thing on your mind.  That is because no matter how much time you spend researching “Amana vs Goodman air conditioners,” or any other combination of brands that you’ve spent countless hours plugging into google, at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter which you choose if it is not installed properly.  “But Tim, aren’t all air conditioning contractors the same?”  Well, are all mechanics the same?  How about all doctors?  No, they aren’t.  By far the most important thing that you need to research is your local group of HVAC contractors and who has the experience and reputation to install your system properly.  Back to topic – those of you who read our articles on a regular basis, know that we are a small, U.S. Veteran-Owned HVAC company in Southern California, and pride ourselves in giving people honest, straight answers to their questions.  So let’s take a look…

So lets take a look at the questions of who is a better fit for you, Amana vs Goodman.  For our purposes, we will compare the Amana ASXC18 in a 3-ton size (the most common size for an average American household) and the Goodman DSXC18 in 3-ton, both of which are on the high-end of their respective companies and are comparable units.

Now before I get any further, I am going to let you in on a little industry secret that for whatever reason most HVAC contractors either don’t know or won’t tell you:

Amana and Goodman are the same company.

No, I’m not joking.  Goodman purchased Amana in 1997.  In fact, not only are they the same company, but they are manufactured in the same manufacturing plant in Houston, Texas and even come off of the same assembly line.  I visited their plant a few years back and saw it for myself.  But that does’t mean that they are exactly the same, just like a Toyota and a Lexus aren’t exactly the same (even though certain models may even use the same engine).

First, a look at the Amana ASXC18

Taking a closer look at the Amana vs Goodman comparison, we will start with the Amana.  Amana has a good reputation and features some of the best reliability statistics in the industry.  Furthermore, it boasts the following features:

  • SEER rating of 18 (the higher the better – 18 is pretty good but there are better)
  • It’s quiet – featuring a high density foam compressor cover, a two-speed condenser fan and a wire fan discharge grille, it rates at around 71 decibels or about the same as the dial tone in your home phone when you pick it up.
  • Price – the Amana ASXC18 prices wholesale (what your contractor pays) moderately compared to comparable units.
  • Two-stage Copeland Ultra-tech scroll compressor (very reliable)
  • Low pressure switches.
  • R-410A refrigerant (Puron – this is standard for the industry and environmentally friendly). More about refrigerants and CFCs can be found here: What is Freon?
  • Most impressively, a lifetime warranty on the compressor and a 10-year warranty on all parts.

ASM’s final opinion: in the end, we only rarely have had negative feedback on our Amana installations.  They are overall a reliable brand that has few complications and in short, you can’t go wrong with them.

  • SEER rating of 18, just like the Amana.
  • It’s just as quiet and also has a high density foam compressor cover, a two-speed condenser fan, a wire fan discharge grille and rates at around 71 decibels.
  • Pricehere’s where the Goodman shines.  It is $300 cheaper than the Amana.
  • Two-stage Copeland Ultra-tech scroll compressor like the Amana.
  • Low and High pressure switches.
  • R-410A Puron refrigerant.
  • Same warranty as the Amana.

ASM’s final opinion: if you are still wondering what my opinion is then exit out of this browser window, close your computer and have a cup of coffee because you are asleep.  Go with the Goodman.

Final opinion on Amana vs Goodman air conditioners.

Both the Amana and the Goodman are superior products.  But I will tell you right now that they are pretty much the same only the Goodman is $300 cheaper.  I personally would go with the Goodman and actually installed the DSXC18 in my parents’ house last summer.  But if you still have your doubts and the name is important to you, then I’d recommend you go with the Amana.  I have found out many times in my life that peace-of-mind is worth a lot.  I will also beat the dead horse and tell you that it is far more important to choose the right contractor than it is to compare Amana vs Goodman.

Don’t stop your research at Amana vs Goodman, but instead continue to look at the dozens of brands that are out there.  If you like Amana and Goodman, then I’d recommend you also take a look at the Carrier Infinity vs Performance series of air conditioners.  Carrier is one of my favorite brands and is as reliable as they come.
