If you are here then you are likely asking yourself, what does HVAC mean? Doesn’t it bother you when contractors throw around industry words and never explain what they mean? R-22, condenser, HVAC – what does any of this stuff mean? In order to answer a question about what does HVAC stand for, you first need to understand the HVAC industry itself. It always bothered me when people spoke to me using industry terms that I couldn’t possibly understand unless I was in the business myself, which of course would mean that I didn’t need them. Are they trying to prove that they’re smarter than me, or are they just that out-of-touch that they don’t realize they are doing it? I had always hoped that it was the latter but finally realized that they did know something I didn’t. It bothered me. In the end, it made me ask if I was doing that and maybe I didn’t realize it? Unfortunately, the HVAC industry is much like the car maintenance industry, and relies on the fact that most people don’t know what you’re talking about. But I don’t think that keeping people in the dark is that important to keeping a business running strong and in fact prefer when our clients take an active interest in what we are doing. HVAC is one of those terms that gets thrown around all too often these days and never get’s explained. So if you are wondering what HVAC means, then you’re on the right track?
So What Does HVAC Mean?
It really is that simple, so don’t let anyone out there fool you. In everyday terms, HVAC is just air conditioning – your air conditioning technician or your air conditioning guy. So next time some contractor starts throwing the word HVAC around, you’ll know what they are talking about. But that’s not all – there are a couple of other HVAC terms that your should take a look at for next time, because knowing what they mean might save you from getting ripped off:
HVAC Terms You Should Know
- HVAC Unit – now that you know what HVAC stands for, you can figure out that an HVAC unit is just your air conditioner.
- Compressor – a mechanical device in your HVAC unit that compresses gas – used by your air conditioner to compress freon.
- Evaporator – the part of your HVAC unit where liquid refrigerant expands into a gas.
- Refrigerant – a chemical substance that releases heat as it expands or evaporates, creating a cooling effect.
- Freon – a type of refrigerant used in your system. More on Freon can be found in: What is Freon?
- Thermostat – it’s the switch that turns your HVAC unit on or off and where you set your desired temperature.
