So, you're wondering, what are the top 10 heat pump brands? People often ask us questions about various brands, so today we'll discuss some of the best heat pump brands for you and your family. Those that have read our articles before know that we started as a small, U.S. Veteran owned and operated HVAC business, and built our reputation of giving honest, straight answers (sometimes to their dismay); this will be no different. Just remember that more important than researching the top heat pump brands, is to do some research on the contractor you get to install your new heat pump, as this will have a much bigger impact on the price to install, and the overall longevity of your unit. In this article, we will discuss the means we used to rank the best heat pump brands, some tips for your upcoming project, and finally, our list of the top 10 heat pump brands to consider for your upcoming installation.
Top 10 Heat Pump Brands - How We Rate the Best Heat Pump Brands
Before we tackle our list of the top 10 heat pump brands, it’s important to first discuss the means we used to evaluate the best heat pump brands. Maybe it’s just the high school debate nerd in me (go Terriers!), but we all need to be on the same page. Also, you need to know that our list of the best heat pump brands is completely unbiased...we have no horse in this race. Even when we were a small HVAC company, we installed whatever brand the client requested. Now that we are a nationwide HVAC consultation company, this hasn't changed. But that doesn't mean I'm afraid to tell you my opinions...as my wife can attest (in fact, she's rolling her eyes at me right now).
So, how did we rate the best heat pump brands? We rate heat pump brands based on four value criteria:
- Reliability - We just can't recommend a company that has reliability issues; we won't. Every company listed on our list of the best heat pump brands is reliable. Period.
- Cost - Part of figuring out the best heat pump brand for a client is cost, as one might define value as the best results, for the lowest cost.
- Customer Service - How do these heat pump brands deal with warranty issues and phone calls?
- Features - Digging too deeply into the realm of features is outside the scope of this article, but we won't recommend a brand that doesn't provide the basic features needed in a modern heat pump.
There you have it...the best heat pump brands were chosen using these four criteria, mixed with a little bit of Scotch, and a whole lot of experience.
Top 10 Heat Pump Brands: Tip #1 - Be Wary Of Consumer Reviews
When doing your research on the top 10 heat pump brands, take consumer reports with a grain of salt. Look, I know that some of you are rolling your eyes, but stick with me; I’ll explain.
Whereas consumer reviews are a really terrific way to do research on where you’d like to have dinner, it’s not really that effective at researching the best heat pump brand for your project. While the internet is filled with Jonathan Gold, wanna-be food critics (no offense if that's you), people typically only review their heat pump when there’s something wrong with it.
For instance, if your new Goodman heat pump runs efficiently for twenty-five years with no issues, are you really going to go online and write a positive review? Probably not...I mean, the internet really didn’t even exist when you bought the damned thing, or maybe it did, only in its infancy (thank you, Al Gore...). Yet, when your food is terrific, it’s time to get online and support your local crack-laced Thai food restaurant. Make sense?
It’s true of all HVAC genre...air conditioners, furnaces, and even the best heat pump brands. I’ll tell you a little story...my partner Mike once hypothesized that when a heat pump was ranked first one year, it would be ranked last the next year. Why, you ask? Because (oh I’ll feed you, baby bird...), when a heat pump brand is ranked first one year, then every unlicensed chop-shop in the country is installing them that year. Therein lies the problem.
HVAC is not a “figure it out as you go” type of trade, so people who don’t know what they are doing, don’t vacuum pump the line set, charge the unit properly, or any of the other things that are required to ensure your heat pump has a happy, healthy life. Sure, it’ll run a few years...but just like caking your arteries with cholesterol, eventually it’ll give out prematurely (mmm...In-N-Out Burgerwould hit the spot right about now...double-double animal style...I digress). But, do you call up and blame your local contractor (who is long gone by this point and working under a different name...I’m an optimist, in case you can’t tell)? Nope. You go online and write a crumby review of your least favorite heat pump brand; right?
- Ok...moral of the story: research your local contractors; it’s the single most important part of your research process.
A good contractor can mean the difference between a good installation and a bad one. I’ve seen Carrier heat pumps fail after two years due to improper installation, and I’ve seen no-name HVAC company units that lasted 25 years. If you need a local contractor that is trusted, you can enter in your zip code and get in touch with a local ASM loosely-approved contractor (joking...they are all licensed). It’ll save you some time, and it's free.
Best Heat Pump Brands: Tip #2 - Don't Overpay for Your New Heat Pump
Don't overpay for your new heat pump. Here's a short video on an online calculator that can save you tons of money and heartache:
Top 10 Heat Pump Brands - The List
You were promised a list of the top 10 heat pump brands, and whilst my love for a leisurely lifestyle drives me to end this article right now - sigh - I’ll instead drink another non-Scotch-laden (right...) cup of coffee, eat my In-N-Out, and crank this thing out.
Part 1: Best of the Top 10 Heat Pump Brands
1. Goodman Heat Pumps
I know what you’re thinking...Goodman Heat Pumps? Yep...you read that right. Goodman took first place in our mediocre list of the top 10 heat pumps this year. You may not have heard of Goodman heat pumps, but you’ve probably heard of their top-shelf brand, Amana.
Goodman Manufacturing owns and distributes Amana. But, they also distribute their own heat pumps under their brand name, Goodman. They offer the same technology (and the same internal components) at a fraction of the price. We are talking Toyota and Lexus here...except Amana doesn’t come with faux leather interiors. If you don’t understand the reference, then you’re clearly not a car person; moving on. Goodman is reliable and their customer service top-notch. As such, they earned the rank of number one this year on our list of the best heat pump brands.
2. Day & Night Heat Pumps
Next on our list of the best heat pump brands is Day & Night. Who? Yea, you may not have heard of Day & Night Heat Pumps, but they are owned by United Technologies (UT). Who? I know...we’ll get there. UT is the parent company of a few brands you might have heard of, including, but not limited to: Carrier, Bryant, and Heil.
Their products are reliable and sturdy, and again, they use the same internal components as their top-shelf big brothers, including Aspen Coils. Therefore, they ranked second on our list of the best heat pump brands.
3. American Standard Heat Pumps
If you haven’t heard of American Standard, then that’s ok. Go to a public restroom and use the toilet. That toilet has a 46% chance of being manufactured by American Standard, or one of their subsidiaries (not really...actually I just made that percentage statistic up because it sounded better [and I’m too lazy to look up the real number because it doesn’t really matter]. Besides, I can’t shake the inner debater). And yes, I did brackets inside of parenthesis...I digress.
American Standard Heat Pumps are next on our list of the top ten heat pump brands, and for good reason! Although they are a bit on the pricey side, we’ve found their heat pumps to be top-notch, and while they are one of the few name brands you might recognize (they make heat pumps, toilets, faucets and a bunch of other things I don’t feel like listing), they also provide a terrific value to the consumer. As such, they came in third on our list of the best heat pump brands this year.
Oh, and they own Trane...
4. Mitsubishi Electric Heat Pumps
Next on our list of the top 10 heat pump brands is Mitsubishi Electric. You have to have heard of Mitsubishi, right? They make (made) everything from mid-grade automobiles to the Mitsubishi Zero fighters that my Naval Aviator brethren had the good pleasure (and pain) of dispatching during World War 2 (too soon?).
Their products are absolutely premium, they just have one problem...they are expensive. Look, nice things cost money, and while the majority of this list is targeted towards the average consumer, I just had to throw this in for the Porsche lovers out there.
The reason they are so expensive is because they are mini-split systems, meaning that instead of one central heating and air conditioning system, you have a different system for each room. While this isn’t the ‘Merican way of doing things, this is how the Europeans and Japanese do it. It’s much more efficient to just air condition or heat the room you’re using than the whole house; an acquired taste, I know. I’m like most of you and burn liquid dinosaur just to make sure it’s a comfortable 72 degrees when I walk to the kitchen and grab a beer...but I’ve, once again, gone on a rant. So, as my wife rolls her eyes looking over my shoulder, I’ll move on...
Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps also feature a unique take to their units, which includes a Flash-Injection Bypass Circuit, meaning their heat pumps work efficienctly at lower temperatures, and aren't as susceptible to low temperature issues as normal heat pumps.
Top 10 Heat Pump Brands - The Mid-Listers
5. Bryant Heat Pumps
Next on the list of our top 10 heat pump brands is Bryant. Made by the same company that brought you names like Carrier, Bryant heat pumps provide a reliable product with decent customer service. The only drawback on Bryant heat pumps is the price.
While they are not as expensive as Carrier itself, their technology is offered in the name Day & Night for significantly less. But Day & Night is not offered everywhere, unfortunately, so this would be your next best bet to get Carrier technology on discount. Do it!
6. Carrier Heat Pumps
Next - sigh - on our list of the best heat pump brands is the company that started it all, Carrier heat pumps. Carrier invented the original air conditioner in 1902 (unless you subscribe to the Ancient Aliens theory, in which case it was salvaged off of a downed UFO that crash-landed off the coast of Bar Harbor, Maine in 1902), and as such has earned a place on our list.
Look, their technology is terrific and they are reliable...but they are pricey. I just have a hard time recommending them at the top of our list when their technology is offered in other heat pump brands at a fraction of the price. But some of you like using the name brand because you feel more comfortable...I get it. If you’re that person, then Carrier would be the best heat pump brand for you.
7. Trane Heat Pumps
Trane heat pumps are next on our list of the top 10 heat pump brands. They are better known to us in the commercial sector, but they do offer heat pumps in the residential sector as well. They are sturdy and reliable, with good customer service. They are, again, on the pricey side in my not-so-humble opinion, but they are good. As their slogan goes, “it’s hard to stop a Trane.” Clever indeed.
8. Amana Heat Pumps
I like Amana heat pumps less than the other brands. QED. Next brand.
Just kidding...Amana is lower on the list because their customer service isn’t as good as it could be, and that’s HUGE to us. When we consult for a company, it’s important to us that they go with a company that will be there for them 100% of the way, and give them zero blowback on warranty issues. Go with Goodman, if you want that. If you don’t, then Amana offers a terrific product and a 30% mark-up if you’re interested.
9. Rheem/Ruud Heat Pumps
Rheem & Ruud heat pumps (they are the same company) have been around forever and are readily available at a fair price. But they also use a proprietary zig-zag coil configuration that we’ve found to be more prone to freezing up. It is also very difficult to clean, often requiring the whole coil to be removed. Other than that they are okay, so don’t freak out if the contractor you like sells them...just touch your inner Buddha and know...oooohm. As such, they are near the bottom of our list of the best heat pump brands.
Last of the Best Heat Pump Brands
10. Lennox Heat Pumps
Last on our list of the top 10 heat pump brands is Lennox heat pumps. Those who have read our articles before know that we have no love Lennox.
It’s not just because a Lennox contractor stole my girlfriend in college (come on...you know that’s not true), it’s because of their price...in part. It’s not just that they are the most expensive heat pump manufacturer in the industry...or that it would probably be cheaper to contract Ferrari to custom-fabricate a heat pump for you, including field testing conducted by Seb Vettel himself. It’s because - in my opinion - you don’t get what you pay for.
Look, I don’t mind buying nice things that cost money. I’d buy a Breitling and a Porsche if I didn’t have kids...but when you buy a Porsche, you are buying one of the finest automobiles in the world, with the customer service to match. With Lennox, I just have never found them to be quite there.
Their parts are all proprietary, so you can only buy them through Lennox, which often takes days (or weeks), ad costs you three times as much as their competitors. Conversely, I can get repair parts for your Carrier at any Bryant, Heil, or Day & Night dealer. Make sense? That's why they ended up last on our list of the best heat pump brands.
That being said, their products - like all those on this list - are sturdy and reliable. But, I just can’t recommend them. Just remember though, that who you have install your heat pump is the most important part of the installation. This is a skill-driven trade, so if you’ve got the Mozart of HVAC knocking at your door, go with him/her...even if they are selling Lennox.

Top 10 Heat Pump Brands - Final
In case you’re a skimmer, vice a reader, we discussed the top 10 heat pump brands to consider when purchasing your new unit, including tips on who to choose, and how to save money. I’ll tell you what my flight instructors used to tell me (and what I’d later shamelessly plagiarize as my own idea to my flight students)..."if you’re going to listen to one thing in this entire article, remember this:" who you get to install your heat pump is way more important than where your unit falls on our list of the best heat pump brands. Now...here’s where I say something clever and cute, then tell you to contact us with any questions or suggestions...but, I’d really rather that you didn’t...
